Dr. Nelson graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002 with Highest Honors. His professional interests include preventative medicine, both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, and nutrition. He has significant surgical experience, from laser surgery to advanced orthopedic procedures. His first priority is always the pet’s quality of life, and he strives to improve that quality by providing the highest quality veterinary medicine and surgery.
He bought Kuhns Animal Clinic in July 2008 for two reasons. First, he loves Geneseo and the surrounding community. He is a very big fan of the Andy Griffith Show, and he always says that Geneseo is a modern day Mayberry. It is an ideal place to raise a family and call “home”. The people are so friendly and really love their pets. Second, Dr. Kuhns had a wonderful practice and reputation, and Dr. Nelson wants Maple Ridge Veterinary Clinic to continue that tradition.
Dr. Nelson is married to his high school sweetheart, Faith. Both of them grew up in Dallas City, IL (near Nauvoo, IL), graduated from Dallas City High School and Monmouth College. Together, they have three children: Hayley, Drew, and Sydney. They also have several “four legged children”, a golden retriever named Wrigley, a Labrador retriever named Chief Oskee Bow Wow, along with cats Einstein, Woody, and Jessie. The Nelsons had to put their beloved golden retriever Duncan down in April of 2012 due to arthritis and bone cancer issues, and they miss him dearly.
On November 11, 2011, Dr. Nelson received the Dr. Erwin Small First Decade Award at the 129th Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association annual meeting in Peoria. The award is given annually to one veterinarian who has graduated from veterinary college within the last 10 years. It recognizes someone who represents high standards of professionalism and demonstrates leadership in programs approved by the ISVMA. He was also elected and installed as a member of the Board of Directors of the ISVMA at the same meeting.
Dr. Nelson is featured on the first Monday of the month on Paula Sands Live for their “Ask the Vet” segment. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Mentor Program, and the Geneseo Kiwanis Club. He also serves on the board of directors of the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (he was elected as Treasurer of the ISVMA for the 2013 term), the Mississippi Valley Veterinary Medical Association, the Animal Emergency Center of the Quad Cities, and the Geneseo Chamber of Commerce where he is serving as Past President in 2013.
Faith is the wife of Dr. Nelson. She was born and raised in Dallas City, Illinois and graduated from Monmouth College in 1999. She has worked as a legal assistant in Champaign and in Quincy. She is currently the practice manager/bookkeeper of the clinic and is also a full-time mother of their three children, Hayley, Drew, and Sydney. In addition, she works part time for Nash, Nash, Bean, and Ford Law Firm. Faith is excited to be in Geneseo and to raise their children here.
Elizabeth was born and raised in Geneseo, Illinois and has constantly had a love of animals. Whether it was her first rescue dog, Topspin, or Binkie the bird, Elizabeth has always wanted the absolute best for all 2-legged and 4-legged friends.
After graduating with honors from St. Ambrose University with double BAs in English- Language Arts and Education, Elizabeth began teaching at the secondary and collegiate levels. Her first eight years of teaching were in Houston, Texas, where she and her husband, Jeff spent time rescuing and finding homes for American Pit Bull Terriers, in the same family of American Staffordshire Terriers. She currently teaches music at a private school. She and her husband have three beautiful daughters, Clare, Elouise, and Delilah and two dogs, Maya (American Pitbull Terrier) and Dumbledore (Pitbull Terrier mix). In her spare time, she loves camping with her family and singing, performing on a regular basis.
One thing that Elizabeth has always had an affection for is helping people. By working as the receptionist at Maple Ridge Veterinary Clinic, she has been able to help people by helping their pets. Constantly learning and staying abreast of basic animal care, Elizabeth has been able to work with Dr. Matt and his clients to keep pets happy and healthy. She is honored to be working at MRVC and proud to be able to.
Abby grew up in the sweet little town of Annawan, IL. After graduating from high school in 2004, she continued her education at Western Illinois University earning her BA in English, with a minor in Psychology.
Upon gratuation, Abby moved to the even smaller town of Kirkwood where she and her 3 "fur babies", Charlie, Emi, and Maddie lived. In 2012, she added a beautiful son, Ryder, to the mix. Ryder is an outgoing, polite, loving, mischevious little boy. Abby and Ryder moved back to Annawan in 2014 to be closer to family and friends. We couldn't be happier for that move!
Abby is very much a people-person. She has always worked with and really enjoys getting to meet new people. What better place to do that than Maple Ridge!! Every day is a new adventure, and we are blessed to have her continue that adventure with us.
Jaime grew up in the Milan- Rock Island area and graduated from Rock Island High School. She furthered her education by pursuing a degree as a Certified Veterinary Assistant at Stratford Career Institute, where she graduated with high honors. Jaime has worked as a CVA in the greater Quad-Cities since 2006, then joined the Maple Ridge team to be closer to home.
Jaime is a happily married military wife, and she and her husband have two beautiful children, Lana and Jake. Together they have a little menagerie of furry and feathered family members: Dexter (Doberman), JP (pit mix), Cruz and Beckham (both cockatiels). Jamie loves to go camping and watching football.
Being involved with animal rescue (especially bully breeds), and military opportunities, Jaime is able to share her knowledge and experience with the Maple Ridge clientele. We are happy she has joined us!!
Hayley is a student at Geneseo High School, focusing on sciences. She is in the school’s marching band and Honors band, as well as Jazz and Pep bands. Hayley enjoys her time working with SLAP, and advisory board for her school.
As the oldest child of Dr. Matt and Faith, the clinic is becoming even more of a family business. At home she has 3 dogs, Wrigley and Ivy (English Retrievers) and Pippa (Brussels Griffon); 3 cats, Einstine, Charlet, and Ester; and a rabbit, Henry. Hayley enjoys reading, listening to music, TedTalks and tie-dying.
Hayley loves working with all the pets in boarding and hospital recovery. And we love having her here!
